During a stormy night, Byron (Gabriel Byrne), Percy Shelley (Julian Sands), Mary Godwin (Natasha Richardson), Claire Clairmont (Myriam Cyr), and Dr. John Polidori (Timothy Spall) gather to escape boredom. They experiment with drugs, sex, and storytelling, challenging each other to invent the most terrifying tale.
The night spirals into opium-fueled hallucinations, eroticism, guilt over lost children, and supernatural visions. This chaotic evening famously inspires Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Polidori’s The Vampyre.
The movie is known for its over-the-top, frenetic style, blending historical fiction with intense psychological horror and dark humor. It’s a highly stylized.
The musical “Kiss in a Castle” focuses more on the magical atmosphere, the boundary between reality and dreams. The musical is thus a romantic fairy tale. Despite these major differences, both projects share common roots that date back to 1816.
